Paul Newman " The Halter Horse With The License To Ride" (Bev McCollum 1984)
Paul Newman today at 29 years old, June 2008. Not bad for my skinny old man and still pawing the ground for the scent of a mare.

In case you don't know about Paul Newman, here's an interesting story:
Paul's Dam, the phenominal show mare, Jolene Straw, bred by Clark Rassi & owned by Vanness Quarter Horses only produced two foals before she lost her battle to laminitis. The first foal she produced was Paul Newman and the second, was Joanne Woodward. We all know that Joanne is the dam of "Art I Sweet", plus many other great foals and her produce record remains a stellar accomplishment in AQHA breeding history.
When we had both, Paul's sire, Mr Poco Music, & Paul standing on Stallion Avenue at the Congress together, nine times out of ten, customers would select Mr Poco Music. The show record, the looks & all the chrome on Mr Poco Music would always win out. I'd get a little? upset and say, "Heh, look at the blood behind Paul, look at his Dam, come on you guys, you gotta look further than all the splashy white legs & the incredible show record, it's all in the blood!" Of course I lost.
Well, you probably know where this story is going. With siring 2/3 less mares than his father, Paul out-sired his father to such a degree thats its almost ridiculous. One night, a group of my friends and I got together and did the math. I can give you the stats, but don't want you to spend all night reading this........ its just old history, but noteworthy.
The moral of the story: Do your research, cover every aspect of who you are planning to breed your mare to & pay specific attention to the all the Dams & the blood. You might be dazzled by the pictures you see , the show records, etc., but make certain never to disregard the Dam's blood on everyone's papers.
Paul is 29 years old this year and is in good health considering old age. He has the run of the farm, spends his days with his favorite mares, hates the goat that I bought for him to keep him company ,(the goat fell mutually in love with a longhorn steer, go figure this one?) Paul goes wherever he wants, terrorizes the other studs, etc. In short, he owns the farm. If you get the rare opportunity to find an own daughter of Paul Newman, please let me know, or breed them yourself to something good. I've bought all the Newman mares that I can find and our Newman daughters/granddaughters are by far, in the same league as all the high powered pleasure, modern bred, broodmares that I own.
